Increasing visibility and diversity in the main street, as part of the Dunedin Pride Festival this vacant shop became transformed into a dynamic and friendly festival hub and a space for people to meet in a queer-friendly space. The many events and artwork included daily lunchtime film screenings, meetings, an exhibition, drag storytelling and a panel discussion.
Q² Trust have a vision to create an inclusive and affirming environment for queer/rainbow communities in Dunedin and surrounding areas. The opening of Dunedin Pride on the 8th of April at 6pm is a chance to introduce Q² Trust to the world and celebrate diversity. Sue Bidrose from DCC will officially open the festival followed by performances and music from Sacrilege Productions, Maria Colombo, Aliana Gray and Tyler Neumann.
All events at 23 Princes are free plus there is info about other happenings. Running throughout the week is a showcase of artwork from amateur and professional queer artists, or artists who explore queer themes, and a read-in areastocked with Queer friendly books. There are two community engagement art pieces. People are invited to contribute to a string-art wall piece, a large scale version of the pride logo complete with rainbow string to wrap around the nails. Second is a wall mounted drawing machine, drawing the Pride Festival's unicorn logo and the text "What does Pride Week mean to you?" on posters for people to colour in and hang on our Pride Wall.
Have you ever had a craving to crochet, a yearning for yarn, or been nuzzled by the need to knit? Come and hang out with those who love to knit (or want to learn how!) in a calm and cosy queer-friendly space. This is a place to be around other queers to chat about whatever and those who want to do something with their hands, so just bring some needles and yarn, and unleash your inner-grandma with tea and biscuits! Queer Stitch'n' Bitch is a new student run group at the University of Otago. They will hold their regular meeting on Wednesday 11 April, 4.30-5.30pm at 23 Princes and open the meeting up to community members.
Each day people can take their lunch break while watching a film during our daily lunch time film screenings. On alternate days we will show More Than Four and Through Rainbow Tinted Glasses. More Than Four is a short film project by Wellington based organised, InsideOUT. The film aims to give localised visibility and representation to some of the more marginalised identities within our rainbow communities: https://insideout.org.nz/more-than-four/. Through Rainbow Coloured Glasses, is a film exploring the queer history of Christchurch. 'Hard-hitting, deeply honest, embracing and at times hysterical, we glimpse the scope of the human struggle and celebration that encapsulates how a community is defined and ultimately defines itself': http://www.throughrainbowcolouredglasses.co.nz/
On Monday 9th April at 7pm Student Christian Movement Otago supported by the Rule Foundation, are delighted to host a panel discussion. The ecumenical panel of Christian leaders will open the conversation followed by Q&A. Together they will celebrate and recognise the progress that has already been made by the Queer/affirming Christian community in New Zealand and encourage one another in the work they are still called to do. All welcome, haere mai.
On Sunday 15th April its Drag Story Time. Drag performers will read children’s stories about diversity, a fun event for the whole family! Stories will be read by Sacrilege Production performers Miss Sadie Salome, Andrea Woolf and Chicago Capricciosa.
