Spectacle Dunedin presented PLAY, an immersive, participatory pan-art show as part of the 2023 Dunedin Fringe Festival.

PLAY featured 3 interactive installations bracketed by musical performances from Spontaneous Rhombustion and Space Bats Attack!

Spontaneous Rhombustion, an improvisational band made up of four Ōtepoti based musicians, Hamish Fyfe, Paul McLennan-Kissel, Chris Miller, and Andrew Straight was created to be driven by the audience. Curated conductors Hahna Briggs, and Hana Fahy demonstrated ways to steer the band and navigate the music. The floor was then open to the attendees, where peoples of all ages took to the podium with unfettered joy!

Hello Stranger 2 (Danger!) by Emma Johansson and Yuko Shimada, set up an interactive dating experience with a murderous twist. Did you solve the murder mystery, or fall in love with a dangerous monster? Their game was a welcome follow on from the duo’s previous work Hello Stranger from Spectacle’s 2021 debut show.

Fiberous Pileous by Jess Covell, was a life-sized puzzle made from partially tufted blocks that were open to interaction. Audience members built their own sculptures, relaxed and some proudly solved the physical brain twister.

Spencer Hall installed Viseme, a corridor of rizo printed mouths pursed in different shapes so that as you walked along you could almost hear the pheonetic sub-text in the sounding of our shared experience of language.

PLAY wrapped up with a performance by sci-fi-soaked post-rock collective Space Bats Attack! A fitting end to a multisensory night!

Nominated for Excellence in Music, 2023 Dunedin Fringe Festival.
