Spectacle presents: Spectacle was a dynamic, immersive, participatory show spanning conceptual art, dance, digital art, installation, music, and visual art. Likened to a modern-day version of the “Happening” the show was made up of six core Ōtepoti/Dunedin based artists, and seven collaborators, each reinterpreting the theme Spectacle within their chosen artform.

On Friday and Sunday nights, the collective presented a dynamic and immersive participatory show carefully curated to celebrate local artists from an array of practices, removing the limitations of the usual gallery experience for the audience.

A livestream at both events sent the happening out around the world
FRIDAY LIVESTREAM featuring performances from The Spectacle Band and Person Will
SUNDAY LIVESTREAM featuring performances from The Spectacle Band and Adelaide Cara

The Spectacle Band brought together a cross section of artists from some of Ōtepoti’s most notable contemporary bands; Henry Francis (Soaked Oats), Pania Simmonds (Cosmic Jive Trio), Josh Nicholls (Koizilla, asta rangu, Bathysphere, Fazed on a pony, Space Bats, Attack!) and Ben Sargent (Ha the Unclear, Biff Merchants, Alizarin Lizard)

Spectacle was nominated in three categories at the Dunedin Fringe Festival awards:

Best Dance

Best Technical

Best Original Concept

Spectacle was made possible by funding from the Dunedin City Council Arts Grant and Creative Communities funding, and a highly successful Boosted campaign.

This event was a launch for a series of Spectacle events planned in Ōtepoti. Follow their Facebook page HERE to keep an eye out for more events.
