Dunedin Dream Brokerage supported City Planners, a participatory project by Bronwyn Gale, Judith Eastgate, Marion Familton, and Liz Rowe, presented during the 2026 Dunedin Fringe Festival.
The internationally recognised collective contributed creative and critical perspectives to public discourse surrounding the development of Dunedin’s new hospital. Working from a values-led and practice-based methodology, the artists facilitated a temporary civic space in which complex urban issues could be engaged through accessible, hands-on processes.
The project took the form of an accumulative installation, developed over five days at 343 George Street. Members of the public were invited to contribute ideas for the future of the hospital through clay forms and to create small self-representational avatars. These contributions collectively produced a material record of public engagement, registering a diversity of perspectives and demonstrating community investment in the hospital project.
Conceived as a “working ward” for civic ideas, the installation expanded incrementally over the duration of the project. Its evolving nature encouraged repeat visitation and sustained participation, foregrounding process, dialogue, and collective authorship.
